Many months have passed since we had the privilege to visit
Shinya's lab.
I've been thinking for long at how I could describe all the emotions we felt during that brief visit through some few words typed on the keyboard or through the pictures captured by my reflex, but the more I tried, the more I ended up with nothing but goofy attempts...so here I am, again, at the starting point.
Crossing the threshold, that garage door overlooking West Foothill Blvd in Azusa you get the feeling of being in a place suspended in time and in the history of motorcycling, in a kind of mechanical haven where dreams and fantasies on two wheels dock.
It's clearly perceptible that that is a place where "visions" take shape and new lines, new profiles, new terms of comparison and points of reference for the world's design are drawn.
Tools, marked by time, guard the magic of the art of metal processing, a kind of art that only a real "Metal conscious" can make revive.
You get the sense of being in a "handicraft workshop", where the secrets of the most famous panel beaters, dating back to the golden years of the Italian motoring craftsmanship, are kept, where inanimate metal sheets and blocks come to life to enthral, and where the mechanical culture and love for engines are an expression of life, a way to convey emotions and find yourself. Magic and Zen.
You can breath an air of culture, knowledge and innovation, you can experience real motorcycle "concepts" at first hand, you can admire design unifying with tradition to give life to peerless works of art on two wheels and pieces of art on the go, becoming real points of reference in terms of style.
Shinya is Captain Nemo of the motorcycling design of our age. The care for details and his unique style, set even in the simplest finishes of his works of art, speak about his journey. A journey through the oceans of style of the past motorcycling decades. A journey into the future, twenty thousand light-years from the present to draw new lines of style which we'll eventually understand and follow. Most of all, the internal journey of an artist who is able to give emotions to all those who are bewitched by the magic that runs through a motorcycle.
But the most precious thing, the one that can hardly be described in words or through images is the serenity you concretely feel walking around Chabott Engineering garage. Shinya and Ayu are delightful people, they convey positivity, having met them in person is the most important thing and indeed the best memory.
A thrilling visit, such an experience that we'll remember all our life and a really good reason to travel the world again to visit Azusa.
Sono passati molti mesi da quando abbiamo avuto il privilegio di visitare il laboratorio di Shinya.
Ho pensato per molto tempo a come descrivere le emozioni provate in quella breve visita attraverso le parole da battere sulla tastiera o con le immagini catturate dalla mia reflex, ma più ci provavo e più mi trovavo di fronte a dei goffi tentativi, e mi
ritrovo ancora qui, al punto di partenza.
Appena superata la soglia di quella basculante in lamiera affacciata sul West Foothill Blvd. di Azusa, si ha la sensazione di trovarsi in un luogo sospeso, nel tempo e nella storia del motociclismo, una specie di porto meccanico, dove attraccano sogni e fantasie su due ruote.
Si percepisce chiaramente che quello è un luogo dove le “visioni” prendono forma, dove si tracciano nuove linee, nuovi profili e nuovi termini di paragone e punti di riferimento del design mondiale.
Utensili segnati dagli anni custodiscono la magia dell'arte della lavorazione dei metalli, un'arte che solo un vero “Metal Conscious” può riuscire a far rivivere.
Si ha la sensazione di ritrovarsi in una “bottega artigiana” dove sono racchiusi i segreti dei più famosi battilastra degli anni d'oro dell'artigianato motoristico italiano, dove lamiere e blocchi di metallo inanimati prendono vita per emozionare, e dove la cultura meccanica e l'amore per i motori sono un'espressione di vita, un modo per esprimere emozioni e ritrovare se stessi. Magia e Zen.
Si respira aria di cultura, conoscenza ed innovazione, si possono toccare con mano veri e propri “concetti” motociclistici, si può ammirare il design fondersi con la tradizione, per dar vita a opere d'arte su due ruote senza pari, oggetti d'arte in movimento che diventano veri e propri punti di riferimento di stile.
Shinja è il capitano Nemo del design motociclisto della nostra era, la cura dei dettagli e lo stile unico incastonato anche nelle più semplici finiture nelle sue opere parlano del suo viaggio. Un viaggio attraverso gli oceani dello stile di decenni di motociclismo passato. Un viaggio nel futuro a 20mila anni luce dal presente per tracciare linee di stile che starà poi a noi comprendere e seguire. Soprattutto il viaggio interiore di un artista che sa regalare emozioni a noi stregati dalla magia che attraversa una motocicletta.
Ma la cosa più preziosa, quella che più difficilmente si può descrivere a parole o con le immagini è la concreta sensazione di serenità che si percepisce alla Chabott Engineering. Shinya e Ayu sono persone deliziose, che trasmettono positività, l'averli conosciuti personalmente è stata la cosa più importante, e il ricordo migliore da conservare.
Una visita emozionante, un'esperienza che ricorderemo per la vita ed un ottimo motivo per attraversare il mondo di nuovo e ritornare ad Azusa.
